Human Rights Challenges and Institutional Response

As the most-populated democracy in the contemporary world with very old roots of traditions of welfare of all beings, the concept and practice of Human Rights has attracted great deal of attention in India. Policy-makers, students of law and jurisprudence, members of the Bar and the Bench as well as students of social sciences have taken a keen interest in the projection and protection of Human Rights. This book is a sort of sequel of our Concept and National Policy of Human Rights (APH, 2007) and contains 19 essays dealing with women and the weaker sections, role and responsibilities of police as other organ of public administration, the defects and weaknesses of various statutory institutions for protection of Human Rights. This is supplemented by Indepth- advocacy of the theory and techniques of Human Rights Education, an innovative approach rarely taken in the Human Rights studies.

In legal formal terms, India has an impressive array of Human Rights protection institutions, but the implementation organs of public administration leave much to be desired as many well researched papers in this volume demonstrate with adequate data a detailed analysis of statutory enactments. These studies pertain to several state of India e.g. Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Andhra Pradesh.

This book has been organised in the four sections: I. Gender Perspectives, II. Human Rights Commissions, III. Human Rights: Judiciary and Police Administration, IV. Human Rights of Weaker Sections.
